A young writer from Brooklyn, Jonathan Ames, is feeling lost. Due in part to his drinking, he has recently endured a difficult breakup, is unable to complete his second novel, and has an unhealthy relationship with his magazine editor. Instead of confronting reality, Jonathan indulges in his dreams by moonlighting as a private investigator because he desires to be a hero and a man of action.
