Justin Tolchuk, a sensitive, lanky 16-year-old in Medora, Wisconsin, is merely attempting to survive the social hell of high school. When his well-intentioned mother Franny enrolls him in the school's international exchange student program, she envisions a sporty, intelligent Nordic adolescent who would bestow immediate coolness upon her outsider son. Raja Musharaff, a 16-year-old Pakistani Muslim, is revealed to be the exchange student of the Tolchuk family. Raja, Justin, his family, and the entire population of Medora are in for a very eventful year.
