Their older sister, Lisa, is responsible for watching for their younger brothers, Walter and Danny, after their father is summoned away to work, and she instructs them to remain inside the house. When Walter and Danny start playing Zathura, a board game with a space theme, they are surprised to discover that the game possesses magical powers when their house is launched into space. Walter and Danny had anticipated that their day would be dull. The guys, with the assistance of an astronaut, make an effort to get back home.
