In a rural community in Montana during the 1960s, Joe's mother Jeanette is a housewife, and his father Jerry is a professional golfer. Joe is their only kid. He is 14 years old. When Jerry loses his job and, with it, his sense of purpose, he makes the decision to join the cause of battling the fire in the nearby forest, leaving his wife and children to fend for themselves. The fire is uncontrolled and is burning close to the border with Canada.
