Charles Adare, an Irish immigrant, sets off for Australia in 1831 with the support of his cousin, who has recently been appointed governor. Sam Flusky, a prominent landowner and ex-convict, wants to make business with him when he arrives. Charles meets Flusky's wife, Henrietta, at a dinner party at his house. Henrietta was a friend of Charles's when he was a child back in Ireland. A lot of people think Henrietta is going to go crazy because she drinks alcohol.
