When Alex, then 15 years old, disclosed to her deeply religious Mormon parents that she was gay, they became so terrified for their daughter's eternal soul that they forcibly removed her from their home in Southern California and placed her, against her will, in a conversion therapy facility in Utah. This horrifying account is based on a true event. Alex was held captive for eight months with total strangers, during which time she was subjected to severe beatings and punishments that were designed to cure her homosexuality. Alex was ultimately allowed to attend school, and it was there that she became friends with a lad who was the president of the gay-straight alliance. This occurred when she came to the realization that in order for her to survive, she would have to comply to their regulations. Alex was able to get in touch with an attorney thanks to his assistance, and the attorney eventually assisted in planning her escape.
