Lemuel Childs, a Pentecostal pastor, leads his congregation in the handling of poisonous snakes so that they might demonstrate their worthiness before God. Mara, daughter of Lemuel, harbors a secret about her romantic history with an unbeliever named Augie, and it is this secret that poses a danger to the unity of the church. As the day of Mara's wedding to a devout follower draws near, she must make the difficult decision of whether or not to put her faith in Hope, the unyielding matriarch of their community, with both her heart and her life on the line.
