Inspector Nick Cafmeyer appears to have it all: good looks, brains, and a successful career. But a dark cloud hangs over his life: he has been haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother, Bjorn, since the age of nine. Plettinckx, a convicted sex offender, was interrogated but quickly released. Plettinckx lives nearby and takes great delight in harassing Nick. Then, when a disturbing case involving a missing nine-year-old comes to light, Nick leads a massive search that quickly turns into a relentless manhunt.
