Most of the summer, Neddy Merrill has been away. He returns to a friend's pool. During their conversation, someone sees that the valley is surrounded by a network of ponds. The plan was to jog from one pool to the next in order to complete the valley's swimming course in a day. Stopping in each pool and engaging with the other swimmers tells a tale about him.
