Alvin Straight, a 70-year-old widower and retired farmer, learns one day that his distant brother Lyle has suffered a stroke and may not survive. Alvin is anxious to make amends with Lyle while he still has the opportunity, but his brother lives in Wisconsin, and Alvin is stranded in Iowa without a car or a driver's license.
