In 1916, Helen, who is beautiful and mute, is a housekeeper for an old woman who is sick. There are also two adult sons of Mrs. Warren living in the Warren mansion: Albert, a professor, and Steven, who is a womanizer and is rude. Because of the number of murders of "women with illnesses" in the neighborhood, Helen's mother, Mrs. Warren, is worried about how safe she is for her daughter. Dr. Parry is her doctor, and she asks him to take Helen away from Helen for her own safety. In the Warren mansion, there is a second murder, and it becomes clear that Helen is in danger.
