The photographer Leon lives with his girlfriend and waitress Maya while he waits for a chance to get into the photo business. When Maya calls their friend Jurgis, he sets up a meeting for Leon with the successful owner of an art gallery, Susan Hoff. She looks at Leon's work and tells him how to improve the quality of his photos. Leon is upset, so he goes out at night to take pictures with his camera. He follows three punks down to the subway station, where they attack a young woman. Leon defends the woman, and the punks move on. The next morning, Leon discovers that the woman is gone. He goes to the police station, but Detective Lynn Hadley doesn't pay much attention to him and dismisses what he says. Leon becomes obsessed with finding out what happened with the stranger, so he watches the subway station. When Leon sees the elegant butcher Mahogany on the train, he thinks he might be a murderer and follows him everywhere. This is the start of his journey to the darkness.
