Members of "Jane" risked their personal and professional lives to support women with undesired pregnancies. They defied the state legislature, the Catholic Church, and the Chicago Mob, which profited from abortion. In the pre-Roe v. Wade era, when abortion was illegal in most states and distributing abortion information was a felony in Illinois, the Janes conducted abortions to an estimated 11,000 women.
