The government of Panem compels each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to take part in the annual Hunger Games, which are held on the ruins of what was was the continent of North America. The Hunger Games are a form of perverse entertainment that is also used as an intimidation technique by the government. The "Tributes" are forced to compete against one another in a struggle to the death until only one survivor is left. Katniss is forced to rely on her keen instincts as well as the guidance of Haymitch Abernathy, a drunken former Hunger Games champion, as she competes against other tributes who have received extensive training and have spent their whole lives preparing for the Games. Katniss must make choices in the arena that seem impossible if she is ever going to be able to go back to her home in District12. These choices will pit her ability to survive against her humanity and her love for Peeta. Everyone throughout the globe will be observing.
