Nick Benko, a dishonest fight promoter, hires jobless sportswriter Eddie Willis to promote his current protégé, an unknown Argentine boxer named Toro Moreno. Despite the fact that Moreno is a massive behemoth, his chances of success are hampered by a weak punch and a fragile jaw. Benko exploits Willis' reputation for honesty and status in the boxing community to arrange a series of staged contests that elevate the inexperienced Moreno to the position of number one contender for the championship. Buddy Brannen, the reigning champion and a sadist, resents the attention Toro has been receiving and intends to brutally punish him in the ring. Eddie must now choose whether or not to reveal the truth to the naive Toro.
