Paula McFadden, a retired musical dancer, had a great relationship with actor Tony DeSanti, but instead of taking her to Hollywood, he lands a role in a European film. Elliot Garfield, who kindly lets her stay, including keeping the master bedroom, sublets their (his) New York apartment to him. Lucy, Paula's pragmatic pre-teen daughter, responds to his charm quickly, but Paula is adamant about her hatred of all performers. Despite the pressures of playing too queer for Frisco in a Broadway Shakespeare role, he's determined to wrest romance from ingratitude.
