The Edelweiss Pirates
At the end of World War II, Cologne was a major city. The city is in ruins, everyone is terrified, and a large number of people have died. It is a period marked by extreme inhumanity. The young Edelweiss Pirates of Cologne refuse to yield to the Nazi regime's demands. They engage in combat with the Hitler Youth and scribble anti-war propaganda on walls. Karl is a member of the Edelweiss Pirates, while his younger brother, Peter, is a member of the Hitler Youth. Since their mother was slain in a bombing strike, the two young men have been alone; their father is at the front, and their older brother, Otto, was killed in battle. Cilly, Otto's wife, is trying everything she can to keep her children alive during the war. Carl is attempting to assist her in any way that he can.
