Roland Carstairs hires Holmes to prevent the theft of the Star of Rhodesia, a massive diamond belonging to Lady Margaret Carstairs. Holmes skilfully switches stones with Lady Margaret while in her compartment, believing the diamond will be taken during the train voyage from London to Edinburgh. Roland is assassinated shortly afterwards, and the phony diamond is stolen.
