As a twenty-year-old, Alan (Gleeson) has run out of options. Because of his recent dismissal from his banking position, he now works part-time at Dublin Airport's visitor center with his mother. There, he runs into his high school sweetheart Alice (Paré), who is waiting for a flight back to New York. Summer romance ended eight years ago when Alan promised to come back and visit. In the intervening time, he has not communicated with her. Instead of leaving Dublin after just one night, Alan persuades an unwilling Alice to stay another night in Dublin.
