Four-hundred-and-fortieth athletes are invited to Alaska each February to embark on a trip that will test their bodies, minds, as well as their determination to succeed and survive. Competitors must travel 1000 miles through the Alaskan tundra on bicycles, on foot, or on skis to complete the Iditarod Trail Invitational, which is the world's most difficult and remote ultramarathon. On a single afternoon, more people climb Mount Everest than have cycled from Anchorage to Nome on a single day. This year, however, twenty-six racers will attempt to complete the entire 1000-mile Iditarod Trail course. A 12-day record has been set as the quickest time ever. One of the longest is more than 30 meters in length. It is the unknowns that draw these great competitors to this race year after year in quest of meaning and excitement, but it is those same unknowns that make this one of the most dangerous races on the planet, according to the International Olympic Committee.
