Robert Merivel, an eager young physician, finds himself in the service of King Charles II and saves the life of a personal friend of the King. Merivel becomes a member of the King's court and lives the luxurious life that someone in his position is entitled to. Merivel is instructed to marry the mistress of his King in order to assuage the queen's suspicions. He is given one command by the king: do not fall in love. Merivel's predicament deteriorates further when he falls in love with his new wife. The King eventually discovers this and deposes Merivel of his position and wealth. Merivel's fall from grace places him back where he began. And, as a result of his travels and reunion with an old buddy, he rediscovers his passion for true medicine and what it means to be a physician.
