Platoon Leader
When West Point graduate lieutenant Jeff Knight takes command of sergeant Michael McNamara's tour veterans platoon in a Vietnamese trench camp, he is met with cynicism. Unlike his predecessor, who remained hidden until the conclusion of his tour, Jeff assumes command, discovers that the handbook does not allow for dealing with all situations, and is injured. He returns, having earned the complete respect of men and superiors. The unit also has to contend with the enigmatic locals, whom the G.I.'s ostensibly protect but whom they fear as some collaborate with them, while others work covertly with the Vietcong, and who are all liable to brutal retaliation in whatever case they do.
