After realizing that the employment Will had been counting on to help them get out of their financial bind has vanished in the middle of a market collapse, Will and his wife Dawn find themselves in a financial bind. On their way back home on the winter highway back to their city, they come across Lee and Cheryl, two siblings who are hitchhiking their way to a new life. In a moment of kindness, they stop to help them. In the middle of the night, they come dangerously close to colliding with an elderly man who is walking along the frozen highway, hyperthermic and horribly frostbitten. In the process of looking for his identification, they come across a wad of cash, a hand drawn map with GPS coordinates, and a solitary gold coin hidden inside his coat. With trepidation, Will and Dawn agree to Lee's plan to report him to the authorities as a John Doe and pocket the money. As a last ditch effort to alleviate their financial woes, the four of them set out into the cold countryside in search of buried treasure.
