Bill Lee, a blank-faced bug killer, and Joan, his dead-eyed wife, like to get high on Bill's pest poisons while they are lazing with their Beat poet friends. Bill obtains a drug derived from a centipede after having a devilish encounter with Dr. Benway, who is the creator of the drug. After indulging, he finds out that his cool friends have published his work, which he can't remember writing, he accidentally kills Joan, he takes orders from his typewriter that has turned into a cockroach, he ends up in a city that is constantly changing, and he learns that his work has been published.
