John Rollins, a family man farmer, is stressed out about his financial situation: crows and a lack of irrigation are destroying his corn crop; the bank is on the verge of foreclosing on his mortgage; he does not have enough credit to fix the water pump or buy seeds; and his marriage is in crisis, with his wife Mary spending too much time with her friend Tommy. When John unintentionally discovers a hidden chamber in the barn, he discovers a terrifying scarecrow, which he promptly destroys after his son Michael demands that he do so. However, his next-door neighbor, Jude Weatherby, pays him a visit, gifts him with a six-pack of beer, and persuades him to install the scarecrow in the cornfield. The events of John's life shift out of nowhere: the crows die, the pump begins to function again, irrigating the area, and the banker who was responsible for the closure is killed in an accident. He believes, on the other hand, that his country has been overtaken by something bad, and that this evil is endangering his loving family.
