During an allied bombing of a brothel in Naples during WWII, the wolf businessman Domenico Soriano meets the seventeen-year-old whore Filumena Marturano. They meet by chance two years later, in the post-war period, and begin a long affair. Filumena has been his mistress for twenty-two years, running his shops in Naples while Domenico is away. When Domenico decides to marry the young cashier at his bakery, Filumena seduces him as if she were dying, and he marries her. Later, he annuls their marriage, and she tells him that she has three secretly raised sons, one of whom is his legitimate son, but she does not reveal his identity. Domenico, in his forties, employs a variety of deceptions in order to determine which teenager is his son.
