César and his son Marius own the La Marine Bar in Marseilles' Old Port. Marius' greatest ambition is to board one of the boats that pass by his father's bar and sail away to a distant land. Fanny, a young and beautiful seafood peddler, has secretly loved Marius since she was a child; Marius, who has never admitted it, has always loved Fanny. A sailor stops by La Marine one day and offers him a position on an exploratory ship. Fanny confesses his love to him in an attempt to keep him at bay and make him jealous, inciting a fight between Marius and one of César's old friends, Panisse, a boat merchant who, despite his age, has been courting Fanny for some time. Torn between his love for her and the call of the sea, Marius abandons his dream to be with Fanny, who gives herself to him. Marius changes his mind, drawn back to the call of the sea, as César and Honorine, Fanny's mother, prepare for the wedding.
