French Lt. Col. Pierre Raspeguy is assigned to help crush Algerian resistance troops after being released from a Vietnamese war jail. Raspeguy tries to turn a ragtag group of men into a strong fighting force with the aid of Capt. Esclavier, who has grown weary of battle, and Capt. Boisfeuras, who lives for it. Raspeguy also makes good on his promise to wed a stunning countess if he becomes a general.
