As a youngster in 1880s New York City, the Errol family survives on genteel poverty thanks to the death of his father, Cedric (known as Ceddie). The Earl of Dorincourt, Cedric's paternal grandfather, has long disowned him because of his marriage to an American. He accepts the tiny Cedric as Lord Fauntleroy, his heir, after the death of the Earl's remaining son.
