Tita is head over heels in love with Pedro, but her mother, who has complete authority over her life, would not allow them to get married. Tita loses herself in her cooking after Pedro marries her sister. She soon realizes that she is able to transmit her feelings through the food she produces, infecting anyone who consumes it with the tremendous sadness she is experiencing.
