Andrzej and Krystyna, husband and wife, nearly run over a young hitchhiker on their way to a day at the lake. Andrzej subtly torments the hitchhiker after inviting him aboard; he responds by making advances on Krystyna. When the hitchhiker is knocked overboard by mistake, the husband's concern has unintended repercussions. Roman Polanski directed his debut feature film.
