Ironweed
New York's Capital City Albany Halloween, 1938. Francis Phelan and Helen Archer are squatters in their hometown. She was a radio vocalist, and he was a major league pitcher for the New York Yankees. They are surrounded by death: she is ill, a friend of theirs has cancer, he digs graves in the cemetery and visits the grave of his baby son who he dropped; glimpses of his past, including the ghosts of two men he killed, torment him. Helen decides to give singing a shot at a club later that night while she is out drinking. The following day, Fran pays a visit to his wife and children, and he also gets to know his grandchild. He has the option to stay, but he has decided that it is not for him. Helen retrieves their belongings from storage and then looks for a hotel room for them. It examines their code of fairness and commitment despite their faults and dereliction.
