When Samantha Hughes was born, her father had already died in Vietnam and she had never met him. Samantha is raised by her Vietnam War veteran uncle, Emmett, who is also a member of her extended family. In addition to Tom, Earl, and Pete, Emmett spends time with a group of fellow Vietnam veterans named Emmett, all of whom are dealing with issues related to their time in the military. Her search for her father becomes a full-blown obsession.
