Heidi is an eight-year-old Swiss orphan who is given to her mountain-dwelling grandfather by her aunt. Her aunt then kidnaps her from her grandfather and takes her to live with the affluent Sesemann family in Frankfurt, Germany as a companion to Klara, a secluded, crippled child in a wheelchair. Heidi is miserable, but she makes the best of things, always missing her grandfather.
