A team of scientists is sent to Arkanar to assist the indigenous civilisation, which is stuck in the Middle Ages. Their mission is difficult: they cannot intervene aggressively and cannot kill. Rumata, the scientist, wants to save the local intellectuals but must take a stand. How about: what would you do in God's shoes? Director's note Aleksei dreamed of making this film. It was a lengthy journey. This is a film about love, not cruelty. A love that was real, living, and lasted through the worst of times.
