Paisà is the concluding film in Rossellini's trilogy of war films (Rome, Open City, and Paisà). Germany Year Zero is set in post-war Germany, as opposed to the other two, which are set in German-occupied Rome and post-war Italy, respectively. The narrative focuses on twelve-year-old Edmund Kohler, who is largely left to his own devices in order to survive and assist his family.
