After John's absent father is hit by a stray bullet, Primo takes it upon himself to teach the young boy the street code, which is based on respect and enforced by fear. Primo has been a member of the Bloods since the age of twelve, both in the film and in real life, and the streets of Brooklyn are all he has ever known. While John contemplates whether or not to enter this life, Primo must decide whether to leave it all behind in order to become a better husband and father. Five Star delves into gang culture with searing intensity during those New York summer weeks when the suffocating heat seems to encase everything. Through its unflinching focus, director Keith Miller observes the lives of these two men with a quiet yet pointed distance, carefully eschewing worn clichés.
