Eighteen Springs
Based on an Eileen Chang novel set in Shanghai in the 1930s. Manjing (Wu Chien-lien), a young woman from a wealthy family, meets Shujun (Leon Lai), a wealthy Nanjing merchant's son, at a Shanghai factory. Despite Shujun's misgivings about Manjing's family (her sister Manlu (Anita Mui) is a nightclub "hostess"), they gradually fall in love over time. It is interrupted by Manjing's indecision over the step, Shujun's rejection of her family, and finally her family's baroque abuse and enslavement. The long-awaited reunion of Shujun and Manjing only serves to remind them that wasted chances and unresolved issues live only in memory.
