Dickie Roberts, a former child television star from the 1970s, is now 35 years old and works as a car parking attendant. He applies for a role as a typical guy because he wants to go back into the spotlight, but the director quickly realizes that he is everything from average. Having lost hope of landing the role, Dickie engages a family to assist him in reliving his youth and taking on the persona of an ordinary, everyday youngster.
