Ancient people used a method of torture called Death by 1000 Cuts to kill their victims. Many small cuts were made on the bodies of the victims. None of the cuts were fatal on their own, but when they were put together, they would make them die a slow, painful death. In psychology, the term refers to small problems that aren't paid attention to until they add up to something that's too big to keep from paying attention to. There are times when I don't know which version of the phrase is worse.
