This drama is based on a true story. It takes place in 1965, not long after the Civil Rights Act was passed. In Bogalusa, Louisiana, African-Americans still don't get the same rights as white people. The white power structure in general and the local branch of the KKK keep breaking down their basic human rights. The story follows the formation of a group of local black men, many of them former soldiers, who decide to form a group called "Deacons for Defense," which is a group of all-black people who protect the town's black neighborhoods from "white backlash."
