The Second Sino-Japanese War peaks in 1937, when City of Life and Death is set. Nanjing, the Republic of China's capital at the time, had just been taken over by the Imperial Japanese Army. As a result of this, thousands of Chinese soldiers and citizens were massacred in the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking, which lasted for many weeks.
