America is in the grip of the Great Depression, and the Kamp family is struggling to make ends meet, especially after Mrs. Kamp's untimely death. With her mother gone and her father drowning in medical bills as a result of her brother's polio, Ruthie is expecting another Christmas without presents or festivities. However, when her father brings home one dollar in change and allows the children to spend it on special gifts for each other, the Kamps discover that money isn't what makes Christmas full of joy, love, and miracles.
