In the class-obsessed and religiously divided United Kingdom of the early 1920s, two young runners train for the 1924 Olympics in Paris. Eric Liddell, a devout Christian born in China to Scottish missionaries, refuses to train or compete on the Sabbath because he views running as part of his adoration of God's glory. Harold Abrahams overcomes anti-Semitism and social prejudice, but in his single-minded pursuit he neglects his beloved lover.
