Nicholas Cutler is a once-famous, intelligent, but self-destructive novelist who is currently teaching English to iPhone-addicted working-class adolescents at a public high school. After creating a trashy zombie fiction, he attracts the attention of publishers who are eager to offer him a second shot if he demonstrates he has cleaned up his act. However, what could have been the happiest week of his life devolves into turmoil, and he is ultimately compelled to put others' desires ahead of his own.
