In 1968, two famous public thinkers, the leftist Gore Vidal and the conservative William F. Buckley Jr., engaged in a legendary series of nationally broadcast debates. These acrimonious and explosive interactions, which were intended as commentary on the concerns of the day, came to characterize the modern period of public discourse in the media, marking the big bang moment in our current media landscape when spectacle superseded content and argument substituted substance.
