Barbie is Kara - a modern-day princess who leads a regular life in a modern world. Following a butterfly kiss that bestows abilities on her and allows her to transform into a Super Sparkle, she is prepared to save the kingdom from evil-except for her jealous cousin, who is also kissed by the butterfly and who quickly becomes her adversary and nemesis in the process.
