Tess is a newcomer to a small town who is attempting to manage her insanity while adjusting to her new life with her mother. Tess becomes overcome by hallucinations of Lucy, a young girl who was killed in a hit-and-run accident, and she begins to doubt her sanity once more after coming across her shrine. When a spirit takes possession of Tess's mind and soul, her mother and daughter are at a loss as to where to turn for salvation next: religion or medical treatment? Even though both institutions have failed them to this point, their faith brings them to the home of Sarah, Lucy's mother, who has been depressed since the accident. In the midst of it all, and with the passage of time working against them, Sarah is desperate to believe that Lucy is still alive in Tess, but neither parent is willing to give up on their daughter. Tess must ultimately decide whether she wants to continue fighting or whether she wants to succumb to her affliction now that she realizes what is happening to her.
