Angela's Ashes is based on the best-selling autobiography of Irish exile Frank McCourt and tells the story of young Frankie and his family as they struggle against all difficulties to escape the squalor that plagues the slums of pre-war Limerick. They begin the film in Brooklyn, but after one of Frankie's siblings is killed, the family returns to their hometown and finds the situation there far worse than it was before they left. In spite of having fought for the IRA, Frankie's father faces prejudice in the Republic, making it difficult for him to find work. When he does find work, Frankie uses his earnings to buy alcoholic beverages.
