A young up-and-coming artist in New York City sees his life and dreams irrevocably shattered when the horrific events of 9/11 claim the lives of two of his closest friends, and he accepts guardianship of the couple's two young girls. Eleven years later, while teaching art at an elementary school, he raises the girls as if they were his own, but the financial strain of living in New York City becomes too great, and he chooses to relocate the kids to Buffalo, where he grew up. This "non-traditional" family, suddenly confronted with change, new surroundings, and a new adventure, must learn to adapt to this new life while also attempting to rediscover themselves.
